- India Daily: Hey good-looking, this one's not for you.
This year's best-actor Oscar race offers a head-turning curiosity: among the front-runners are many heartthrobs and few former winners.
Johnny Depp (Finding Neverland), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Aviator), Liam Neeson (Kinsey) and Tom Cruise (Collateral) have no statuettes
on their mantels. Indeed, despite their popularity with moviegoers and the media, few cinematic pin-up boys have won the academy's
recognition. James Dean, Kirk Douglas, Harrison Ford, Cary Grant, Rock Hudson and John Travolta have carried countless films but
never won an Oscar. Richard Gere, Errol Flynn, Tyrone Power and both Douglas Fairbankses were never even nominated, and Fairbanks Sr.
had been the first president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. For those who have looks, fame, fortune and the
company of all the models and starlets in sight, it seems, the world can be a cruel place. By contrast, beautiful young women tend
to dominate the lead and supporting actress races. So why might voters punish handsome men?...
